I only see one Birch in the list. The same Birch appears in 3 columns for Malay Road Name, English Road Name, And Notable the Road is named after.

Am I reading it wrong?

Dear Andrew

Re Street names of George Town, Penang. In my recent research on the governors of Penang (Superintendents, Lieutenant-Governors, Governors, Resident Councillors etc.) I saw that Arthur Nonus Birch was Acting Lieutenant-Governor of Penang from 1871 to 1872.

The list of Street Names attributes Birch Road to JWW Birch, Resident Perak, which sounds reasonable had I not come across Arthur Nonus Birch was Acting Lieutenant-Governor of Penang which seems more relevant.

Would you, in your own research be able to shed light on this?

Hello Andrew. You seemed to be a fairly on-the-level fellow, and your indication of yourself as a lawyer suggests that as well. While I know that generally administrators needn't be consulted on the verge of edit-wars -- my understanding is that the resolution process will usually do the trick -- I have a strong feeling you could sort things out for us rather quickly.

There's an edit war regarding the Kevin James article. Though there's consensus that the article should be included, there's some pretty stern disagreement as to what ought be included. But... that's just my personal opinion.

Hi, I put in so much time and research to develop an article about Sophie Koh (just type her name in the search box) and now it's up for deletion because apparently a user accused me of breaching Wikipedia's deletion policy, and never intended or even did that. Administrators

S4 of the Constitution does not use the word Administator, let alone give the full title. The GG's website says: "The Constitution (Section 4) and the Letters Patent (relating to the Office of the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia) provide for The Queen to appoint an Administrator of the Commonwealth. By convention, the longest serving State Governor is appointed as Administrator when the Governor-General is out of the country, ill or when the position of Governor-General is vacant." The link to the Letters Patent, however, shows that the full title is not used there either.

"administrator of the commonwealth" gets 355 Google hits, while "administrator of the government of the commonwealth" gets 111. Among these there are examples of the "formal" use of both variants.

For example: "I, GUY STEPHEN MONTAGUE GREEN, Administrator of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, make the following Regulations under the A New Tax System (Commonwealth-State Financial Arrangements) Act 1999."

And: "(f) any evidence received by, and any matters submitted to, the Honourable James Henry Muirhead under the Commission of inquiry issued to him on 16 October 1987 by Our Administrator of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia by Letters Patent (as subsequently varied)"

It therefore seems that the title does not have formal status in either variant. Given this, I would suggest that the shorter version be used, while noting that the longer one is used, sometimes, in official documents. Neither the GG nor the Administrator "administer the government," the PM does that, and it seems unlikely that such a misleading title would have been deliberately chosen.

Most of the British Governors-General were peers: of the two who were not, Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson was a knight and Field Marshal Sir William Slim, was both a knight and a serving Field-Marshal. Of the Australian Governors-General, Casey was a peer and all the others were knights until the appointment of Hayden in 1988. All Governors-General down to Stephen were members of the British Privy Council and thus had the additional title "Right Honourable." Australian appointments to the Privy ceased in 1983.
Hayden is thus the only Governor-General to have had no title at all. A strong feeling persists that the Governor-General ought to have a title of some sort. However, when Bishop Hollingworth (as he was then known) obtained a Lambeth doctorate (by which he was subsequently known) from the Archbishop of Canterbury shortly before assuming office, there was some discussion in the press about whether the doctorate was a substantive degree or merely honorary, and whether the reason for its granting was to downplay Hollingworth's continuing episcopal status.

The problem is that the text as you have written it is a non sequitur. The section is supposed to be about the evolution of GGs' titles, from aristocratic titles to plain Bill Hayden. The section you have added does not develop this point but veers off to discuss the nature and purpose of the Lambeth degree, which ought to be discussed at the Hollingworth article. Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Academic dress/Academic regalia

Hello. I see that you have reverted my edit to the Academic dress page. I had redirected it to " Academic regalia " since this term is more explicit. It is also the more commonly used term to describe the subject, at least here in the United States. We should attempt to clarify this together since, as it now stands, there are two identical articles with differing titles. In the United States, "dress" usually refers to the feminine garment. "Attire" or "costume" is usually used in its stead in such a context. Hence "Evening attire" is used to describe formalwear (another Americanism) for either gender, while "Evening dress" would refer only to a woman's outfit. What you might term a "fancy dress party" is called a "costume party" in the US, since "fancy dress" would again imply elegant gowns or dresses. Similarly, "Academic dress" could be confused for the academic gown itself as opposed to the entire ensemble. It is with this logic that I made the initial change to "Academic regalia." Is this term obsolete in British English? Perhaps we should bring in more perspectives. Concerning the image of the gorget patch for midshipmen: What would make the image suitable in your opinion?

I recognise the button needs dressing up with a crown and anchor, but I don't think there is anything else wrong with the diagram. Its SVG after all and scales to any size.

Thanks for uploading Image:Midshipman.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

This user is a potential sock puppet of the banned user GeneralTojo (see Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/General_Tojo), based on his contributions. I'm surprised that this individual has not stated to the contrary. Other users have expressed similar concern: [2] and [3]. The only reason I could deduce is that Hokkien is spoken more widely than Teochew. We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

A Question.

I have an inquiry, what is the lower age limit for being accepted as an admin here on wikipedia? I ask as there seem to be a lot of school kids, ie, those under the age of 18, who are admins. They seem to delete, ban, block, edit wikipedia at times when they do not l ike an certtain article.

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,

MSU Interview

Dear Andrew Yong,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Extended confirmed protection

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

On the nomenclature of Malaysian local governments

  • If you look at all the other Malaysian local government articles, the nomenclature has always been XYZ City/Municipal Council and not City Council of XYZ, i.e. Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Kuching North City Hall and Kuching South City Council. Thus it follows that the nomenclature for Penang Island City Council should stick.
  • Simple Google search indicates that Penang Island City Council has more results than City Council of Penang Island.
  • Regardless, to switch to City Council of Penang Island just goes against the established naming conventions for Malaysian local governments on WP, and to do that would also put all other existing local government nomenclatures to question. hundenvonPG (talk) 15:02, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
