Folks, Ugadi is different from Vishu. Ugadi is the start of the Telugu/ Kannada/ Marathi lunar new year, while Vishu is the Mesha Sankranti, the day when the Sun enters the Mesha raasi. It doesn't even fall on the same day. Please modify the piece to reflect this more accurately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.220.217.115 (talk) 02:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How's vishu a Hindu festival? It's not religious at all. Even Onam can be called relgious but not vishu. Even onam is celebrated as a cultural festival. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.81.144.140 (talk) 12:03, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

To my mind, Vishu is the only occassion when Kerala falls in line with the rest of India in the matter of festivities.Gudi Padwa, Baisakhi, Bihu, Ugadi, Vishu is celebrated all over India.

Deepawali is the festival of India if I may say so being celbrated with gusto in all parts of India. Here Kerala especially central Travancore does not celbrate with great ado.

The festival of Kerala Onam is the occassion of banishing Maha Bali to Nether World by Maha Vishnu. Here too it is not the Supreme Vishnu who caught the fancy of Malayalees but the benoveolent demon Maha Bali who was tricked into banishmnet..

So when Kerala synchs her festivities with the rest of the sub continent it itself is an occassion

'indeed

It is true that though the observance of Vishu comes from Hindu traditions, nowadays it is celebrated by people across many religions in Kerala. However, this is true for many festivals, and it is hard to draw a distinction between which ones are religious and which ones are not. One source that clearly mentions Vishu as being a 'Hindu' festival is an article on the Kerala govt. website : [1] Harivishnu (talk) 04:09, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When is Vishu ?

[edit]

When is Vishu in the Gregorian calendar ? -- 199.71.174.100 00:10, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'd like to ask this same question this year. Can someone put the 2006, 2007, 2008,... dates in the article, please ? -- PFHLai 22:37, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There is no exact date in the Gregorian calendar that Vishu falls on. The Malayalam calendar and the Gregorian calendar dont coincide with the dates. However, Vishu usually falls during April-May. thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu_Joseph |TALK 10:20, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know. Check out the table of dates of Easter to see what I'm asking for. I think such a table would be a very useful reference (on any wikipage about Hindu holidays). However, if it's always April 14, never mind. Is it really always April 14 as the article now says ? -- PFHLai 11:02, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't noticed the edits by User:Girish cs. I've removed the data. It doesn't always fall on April 14th.
About the construction of a table analogous to the one in the Easter page, I think its a good idea. However, its implementation is going to be hard. Let me see if I can find some reliable sources with the info. thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu_Joseph |TALK 14:03, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Maybe a table is too complicated. I think a section simlar to Arba'een#Arba'een in the Gregorian calendar would be good enough. -- PFHLai 08:28, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It doesnt always fall on April 14th, but mostly this is the case. This reference would help [2] Harivishnu (talk) 05:12, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is Vishu the New Year Day??

[edit]

As far as my knowledge goes and as stated in the article, the Malayalam calendar starts with the month of chingam and not medam. As the first day of medam is observed as Vishu, Vishu is not the malayalam new year's day but the marking of spring (This is why flowers and fruits form part of the festivities).--GurufromIndia 18:06, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vishu use to be Malayalam New Year day, and really a secular holiday in kerala. But at some point around 1980 the official new year day was switched to chingam 1st to make Onam the new year festival, as Onam is more prominent festival and main tourist attraction in Kerala. Even though Onam is really a Hindu festival(due to story of Mahabali is from Hindu mythology, secular side Onam is more a harvest festival), involvement of people from other religions is also more for Onam than Vishu. Hindus in Kerala still do kani ("that which is seen first") on Vishu as Vishukkani, but give no significance for chingam 1st. Now days many old people in Kerala still consider Vishu as new day, especially farmers across all religion, as it mark beginning of farming activities of the year. That will also explain people from city dont give prominence to Vishu. --Anonymous (--208.15.90.2 (talk) 17:26, 30 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Yes it is true. Vishu is not the malayalam new year day. It is Chngam not Medam. Please change this mistake Ramki cmc 05:28, 14 April 2007 (

How can the copy say -Since the occasion marks the beginning of Malayalam New Year,- Vishu is not the accepted Malayalam New year day. No where in Kerala it is celeberated as as New Year. In Malayalam Wikipedia this is not mentioned. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pvharikrishnan (talkcontribs) 13:23, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vishu is not the new year as per the Malayali calendar. The Malayalam year is incremented on the 1st of "Chingam" month, which normally falls in August or September. --Rk662003 (talk) 10:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the above statement is true. The official new year day was switched to chingam 1st to make Onam the new year festival, as Onam is more prominent festival. This reference would help [1] Harivishnu (talk) 05:12, 17 September 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Vishu is the Hindu New year for Malayalee Hindus

[edit]

It has always been celebrated as the New Year for Malayalee Hindus right from our Ancestor's time. How can anybody else say not? Please do not try to rewrite tradition and culture. Muslims and Christians have never celebrated it. Don't copy hindus, follow your own religion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shibanair (talkcontribs) 22:53, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Malayalam new year falls on the 1st of "Chingam" month, and not on Vishu. This is easily verifiable by referring to any calendar which shows malayalam months and year (Matrubhumi, Malayala Manorama, etc.). --Rk662003 (talk) 10:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Images and WP:BRD

[edit]

@IMQFT: Welcome to wikipedia. Please discuss your concerns with previous images, and why these hazy poor quality images are better? Please keep in mind WP:COI guidelines, and do not insist on your own personal images to be displayed in this or other wikipedia artcles. We already have two images in the main article that show Krishna. We need one that shows the items in a typical kani tray. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 01:59, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

IMQFT: This note relates to your April edits such as this where you edit warred. Please do not remove talk page comments such as these per WP:TALK. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 17:06, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Image is Wrong: One of the two images added, under the title "Practices" has offerings to Vishnu, which include Onion. This is a wrong practice and the image included may have been published by someone who is ignorant of this fact. Please remove or replace this image. Onions are never offered to Lord Krishna / Vishnu. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tekymind (talkcontribs) 06:59, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
